Why Expensive Doesn’t Always Mean Better in Interior Design and Renovations

It’s easy to assume: Higher price = better result.
And sometimes, that’s true. But in home refreshes, renovations or remodels?
Not always.
Where This Assumption Comes From
You see a beautiful space.
You assume:
It must have cost a lot
Everything must be top-of-the-line
More expensive = more elevated
But what you’re actually seeing is something else entirely.

Good Design Isn’t About Spending More
It’s about:
Making better decisions
Knowing where to invest
Knowing where not to
A well-designed home doesn’t rely on the most expensive options.
It relies on intention.
Where Spending More Does Matter
There are areas where investment is worth it:
Layout and functionality
Quality cabinetry and built-ins
Materials that take wear and use
Skilled labor and installation
These are foundational.
Cutting corners here usually shows.
Where It Doesn’t
There are also areas where higher price doesn’t always equal higher impact:
Decorative pieces
Trend-driven elements
Certain finishes that can be achieved at multiple price points
This is where smart decisions make the difference.
The Difference Is in the Editing
Two homes can spend the same amount.
One feels elevated.
One doesn’t.
Why?
Because one was designed with intention—and one wasn’t.
This Is Where People Overspend
Not on the big things.
On the accumulation of:
Small upgrades
Last-minute decisions
“We might as well…” moments
That’s where budgets quietly drift.
The TRAY Perspective
We’re not here to push higher budgets.
We’re here to help you use your budget better.
Sometimes that means investing more.
Sometimes it means pulling back.
A Better Way to Think About It
Instead of asking:
“How much should we spend?”
Ask:
“Where will this have the most impact?”
That’s Where Design Comes In
Because without that lens, it’s easy to overspend in the wrong places—and miss the ones that matter.
If You Want a Home That Feels Elevated
It’s not about how much you spend.
It’s about how well it’s thought through.
